Stress support during transport

Transport is one of the highest-risk periods in livestock production. Even short trips can trigger dehydration, appetite loss, muscle fatigue and metabolic stress.

All of these directly impact:

  • Liveweight shrink
  • Dark cutting risk
  • Time to return to feed
  • Post-transport health and performance
  • Sale results and MSA grading

Managing stress before animals step onto the truck is one of the most effective ways to protect both animal welfare and financial outcomes.

What actually happens during transport

When livestock are yarded and transported, several things occur at once.

  • Reduced access to water and feed
  • Increased muscle exertion and heat load
  • Electrolyte imbalance
  • Elevated cortisol, the stress hormone
  • Slower gut function, often called dead gut

These responses can continue for days after unloading, often showing up as lost kilograms, slower recovery and inconsistent performance.

How StressGuard supports animals through transport

StressGuard is formulated to help livestock cope with these pressures by supporting three key areas.

Hydration and electrolyte balance

Natural electrolytes help animals maintain fluid balance during travel, reducing dehydration and supporting normal nerve and muscle function.

Metabolic stability

A blend of 10 trace elements and 15 amino acids supports energy pathways and nutrient absorption at a time when intake is reduced.

Natural calming effect

Animals that are calmer travel better, with less bruising, less shrink and faster recovery on arrival.

Practical benefits producers commonly see

Using StressGuard prior to trucking can help:

  • Lower stress levels, calmer animals travel better
  • Reduce shrinkage during transport
  • Maintain hydration and moisture retention
  • Support faster return to feed and water
  • Assist in reducing dark cutters and improving MSA grading
  • Minimise dead gut and sluggish appetite after unloading

These outcomes directly translate into better sale weights, stronger post-arrival performance and improved animal welfare.

Timing is everything

For best results, follow this sequence.

1

Apply through the water supply using the ProDispenser

2

Dose over a three-day period

3

Ideal window is 7 to 3 days prior to trucking

4

Avoid dosing within 24 hours of loading, as results can be reduced

Every kilogram lost on the truck is a kilogram you have already paid to produce.

This approach supports animals before the stress occurs, rather than trying to fix problems after the truck has left.

Why transport support matters commercially

Effective pre-transport support can mean:

  • Better dressed weights
  • More consistent mob performance
  • Improved compliance with buyer expectations
  • Fewer setbacks in backgrounding or feedlot entry
  • Stronger animal welfare outcomes

Where StressGuard fits in your program

  • Sale yard consignments
  • Feedlot induction and exit
  • Long-haul movements
  • Weaning and transport combined
  • Post-purchase adjustment
  • Any major handling or relocation event

It can be used alone for short-term stress support, or alongside ULTRANEX and MEGANEX programs when ongoing nutritional support is already in place.

Why we've added boron

Boron is a trace mineral that works behind the scenes. Rather than doing one job on its own, it influences how the body handles other key minerals. That’s why it’s now included in our conventional livestock formulations.

Where boron plays a role
Mineral metabolismBoron interacts with how the body uses calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin D.
Calcium and phosphorus useTrials in pigs and poultry have linked boron to better calcium and phosphorus retention and stronger bones.1,2
Bone and skeletal developmentBoron is involved in bone formation and mineralisation, alongside calcium, phosphorus and magnesium.2
Antioxidant and immune activityReviews link boron to antioxidant activity and immune response, helping support animals through stress.2
What about cattle and sheep? Research in ruminants is still developing. Studies in dairy cows around calving have looked at boron's effect on energy metabolism and colostrum, with promising early results.3,4 We see boron as a supporting player that rounds out our formulations, working alongside the trace elements and 16 amino acids already in the range.
OrganicMax* and OrganicGuard* remain boron-free to meet organic input requirements.
